The Film Department at Vassar College offers a B.A. which unites film studies and filmmaking. The program encompasses major aspects of the discipline: the history and theory of cinema, dramatic writing, and film/video/digital production, within the framework of a liberal arts education.
Film History and Theory
Our film history courses cover international cinemas, genre, authors, numerous aspects of advanced theory and cultural studies. Many of our mid-level courses are offered on a rotating basis, and new topics are introduced in our senior seminars yearly.
Screenwriting and Production
In production, our students work in several media and genres. These include narrative filmmaking, documentary, experimental video, animation and interactive multimedia. Film majors use a wide range of 16mm, video, and digital equipment as they seek to bring their creative visions to light.
Resources and Facilities
In 2003 we moved to our state-of-the-art Vogelstein Center for Drama and Film. The Vassar Library also houses extensive film history and theory resources (including a video/DVD collection of more than 7,000 titles) and the department hosts a steady stream of guest artists and lecturers.
Field Work/Internships
During the academic year, and especially in the summer months, our students benefit from Vassar’s network of internship placements in all aspects of industry. In recent years, for instance, film students have gained work experience and crucial insights into the realities of contemporary media through internships at New Line Cinema, Pixar, Warner Brothers, NBC Law and Order: Trial by Jury, Partisan Pictures, Jim Henson Legacy, The Children’s Media Project (Poughkeepsie), Upstate Cinema (an art theater in Rhinebeck), and The Film Society of Lincoln Center.
Come Visit!
The Vogelstein Center for Drama and Film is located at the center of campus, behind and to the right of Main Building. Vassar is a few hours drive from Boston and approximately two hours from New York City. Prospective students can arrange to meet with a faculty member if they so desire.
